All the cocoa used in Carma's chocolate couvertures supports the Cocoa Horizons Program, an initiative dedicated to improving farmers’ prosperity while protecting nature and children. Through our partnership with the Cocoa Horizons Foundation, we provide farmers with benefits such as planting materials, soil management support, labor assistance, agroforestry techniques, and coaching. We also empower women and communities by creating income diversification opportunities.
When you purchase Carma's chocolate couvertures products, a portion of the proceeds is reinvested in cocoa farmers and their communities. Additionally, Carma ensures sustainable cocoa sourcing and offers chocolate couvertures with certifications like Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade upon request.

In our Dübendorf factory, we have mastered the art of chocolate production—creating unique cocoa blends, roasting nibs at precise temperatures, and adapting conching times to suit each couverture type. However, exceptional chocolate begins at the source.

Commitment to making a difference

for Perfectly Creamy Chocolate
Milk is an essential ingredient in our chocolate, and at Carma, we source it exclusively from Swiss farms that meet the highest animal welfare, environmental, and ethical standards. Partnering with the Mooh Cooperative, we work with carefully selected farms in the Säntis and Zurich regions—right in the heart of the Swiss countryside. These farms prioritize the wellbeing of their cows, ensuring they are fed nutritious, natural food, have access to fresh water, and spend time on free pastures.
We also focus on environmental responsibility. Our farms adopt regenerative agricultural practices like no-till farming, cover crops, and soil health initiatives. Carma was the first chocolate brand in Switzerland to develop a certified CO₂ reduction methodology for dairy. By introducing Agolin®, a natural feed additive, we reduce dairy cow emissions by 8.8%. This innovative approach helps create chocolate that’s both sustainable and delicious, reflecting our deep respect for nature and farming traditions.

Sustainable Vanilla Sourcing
Vanilla, one of the world’s most expensive spices, provides the primary livelihood for many families in Madagascar’s Sava region, which produces around 80% of the global vanilla supply. Unfortunately, farmers here often struggle with poor living conditions, food insecurity, volatile markets, and low crop yields.
At Carma, we source only high-quality, responsibly grown vanilla to ensure exceptional chocolate while supporting sustainability. In 2016, we launched a sustainability project in the Sava region to work directly with smallholder vanilla farmers. By partnering with Prova, a global leader in vanilla supply, we now use 100% traceable vanilla from Madagascar in our products.
Through this project, we improve farmers' livelihood by promoting better agricultural practices and introducing cocoa farming as an additional income source. We support communities by building schools, libraries, and health centres and by offering training in gender equality and nutrition. To combat deforestation, we collaborate with local communities on agroforestry initiatives. Today, our program benefits over 700 farmers and their families, creating a brighter, more sustainable future for the Sava region.

High-Quality Sustainable Swiss Beet Sugar
At Carma, we exclusively use 100% Swiss beet sugar produced from locally grown and sourced sugar beets. This high-quality, sustainable ingredient plays a key role in delivering the exceptional taste of our chocolate. It contributes to the unique flavor, sweetness, richness, and smooth texture of Carma’s chocolate couvertures.
We proudly support sustainable farming practices by partnering with suppliers who follow FSA standards and continuously improve their sustainability efforts. Swiss beet sugar is processed in two certified sugar factories in Switzerland, where it’s produced with care and attention to quality. Farmers transport the sugar beets by rail, minimizing the environmental impact of transportation. Swiss beet sugar also converts by-products into animal feed and natural fertilizers, ensuring zero waste and promoting a circular economy.
At Carma, we ensure that every bite of chocolate supports a healthier planet and more sustainable farming communities. Our sugar meets the highest sustainability standards through the Farm Sustainability Assessment (FSA), verified by the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) Platform.

Ethically Sourced Eggs
At Carma, we prioritize responsible choices in every ingredient we use. Since 2018, we’ve sourced 100% ethically raised eggs for all our products, including whole eggs and egg-based ingredients. Our eggs come from farms where hens live in humane conditions and are free to move naturally, which reflects our commitment to animal welfare.
We made this change because we believe in supporting better farming practices, protecting animals, and caring for the planet. By choosing ethically sourced eggs, we ensure the high-quality standards you expect from Carma while staying true to our sustainability values.
